Georgia O’Keeffe’s 125th Birthday Celebration

Georgia O’Keeffe’s artistic legacy is undeniable.  Her creativity, boldness, and talent made her one the world’s most significant female artists of the last century.  Her artistic achievements are valued even more so in Santa Fe, as she helped put New Mexico on the map.  The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is celebrating her 125th birthday with a series of events from November 14-17, 2012.   Concurrently, the museum is celebrating their 15thanniversary.

Wednesday, November 14.  Bone Wind Fire film screenings at 1 and 6pm.  Free.  This 30 minutes film uses the words of Georgia O’Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, and Emily Carr to reveal their creative processes.   Each artist responds to their environment and the people who surround them to create their masterpieces.

Thursday, November 15 is Georgia O’Keeffe’s actual birthday.  To celebrate, the museum will have free admission all day.  In addition, they will be hosting a birthday party with the Santa Fe School of Cooking, featuring demonstration-style classes and desserts from the 1920’s – 40’s.  Later in the day, at 6pm, O’Keeffe’s biographer, Roxana Robinson, will give an illustrated lecture about O’Keeffe’s complex life and body of work.

On Saturday, November 17, jazz singer/pianist and multi-Grammy nominee, Karrin Allyson performs at the La Posada Resort.  The jazz concert will be celebration O’Keeffe with all proceeds benefiting the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum.

In addition to all of the special birthday events, the museum has it’s current exhibition, “Georgia O’Keeffe and the Faraway: Nature and Image” on display until May 2013.  The show includes drawings and paintings inspired by the beauty of the painted dessert surrounding O’Keeffe’s house at Ghost Ranch.
