Santa
Fe NM
Activities & Attractions

Santa
Fe is a year-round destination.
Don't make the mistake
of thinking that the arts drift off here from September through May.
There's a wealth of wonder to see, hear and experience
- especially during the winter holiday season, when concerts
and special events abound. Also many outdoor activities are
year-round for recreational enthusiasts, as are historical
attractions.
Historical Attractions
include:
(many within walking distance of El Farolito)
Regional pre-Colombian
history at Wheelwright Museum and at the Museum of Indian
Arts and Culture. Historical sites extending from the
Spanish Colonial period through Territorial status to statehood are
throughout the area. Palace of the Governors now hosts
the state's history museum with more than 17,000 objects on
display. Nearby, the central Plaza, circa 1609, is
perhaps the most enduring symbol of Santa Fe's history. The area's
colonial past is also evoked in the Hispanic Heritage Wing at the Museum
of International Folk Art. Looming over the old part of the city
is the French Romanesque-style St. Francis Cathedral, dedicated
to the patron saint of Santa Fe. Additionally, the Archdiocese of
Santa Fe Museum displays historical documents and chalices that
belonged to Jean Baptiste Lamy (1851) and other bishops. Another
catholic church worth visiting is San Miguel Mission, built
about 1625. The diminutive Loretto Chapel, said to be
modeled after the Parisian Gothic masterpiece of Saint Chapelle, is now
a private museum.
During the past
century Santa Fe emerged as a major art colony. The handsome
adobe Mary Austin House, now a gallery, was home to essayist Mary
Austin. Friends Ansel Adams and Willa Cather were frequent house guests.
Back on the road, visitors cross La Acequia Madre,
the "mother ditch" that has irrigated fields and
gardens for centuries through an intricate, hand-hewn irrigation system.
Other
historical attractions:
Bataan Memorial Museum,
Cross of the Martyrs, Los Alamos Historical Museum, El
Rancho de las Golondrinas (a "living history museum"), Bandelier
National Monument, Puye Cliffs, and Pecos National
Historical Monument.
Great
Outdoors - Adventures & Pastimes.
Santa Fe offers everything
from world-class skiing and spectacular hiking to fantastic
fishing and sailplane soaring among the clouds. Adding to
your enjoyment is a mild climate and sunny skies atop a mountain
backdrop of lushly forested public lands. Aspen vistas provide
dramatic autumn splendor and bird-watchers will enjoy the area's
major migratory flyway. Visitors seeking active recreation won't be disappointed.
Bicycle along paved country roads, boat in no-wake lakes,
fish for bass, perch, salmon and trout in area lakes and rivers,
golf at a top-rated Robert Trent Jones course or other fairways
closer to town and relax in local mineral hot-springs. Take
a guided trail tour on horseback, reminiscent of the Old
West, or take a pack trip for a longer wilderness excursion.
Rafting opportunities range from calm and placid to class-four
whitewater thrills. The area around Santa Fe offers more than 3
million acres of public forest land for you to explore. Popular hiking
trails include the Chamisa and Winsor trails... Summer
thoroughbred and quarter horse racing can be found at the
Downs of Santa Fe. Early morning hot-air ballooning allows
for city views and peaceful floats. Downhill ski at the
Santa Fe Ski Area and ride the chairlift in summer for a
scenic trip to the summit. Let's not forget to mention rock
climbing, running, sledding, snowboarding and inner-tubing,
swimming and tennis.
Walking
Tours begin out our door, at the nearby Plaza.
